- Netters,
-
- I am getting Frame Check errors in Trumpet with one USR modem but
- not another, and I have tried everything in all of the faq's
- I can find without making any progress. First I'll describe the
- problem and then explain what I have done. I hope someone will
- be able to tell me the solution.
-
- My machine is a Texas Instrument Travelmate 4000 WinDX2 laptop,
- which uses an Intel 486DX2/50MHz processor. Com1 as installed
- cannot be configured for faster than 9600 baud in the bios setup
- program provided with the machine. MSD shows an 8250 UART on this
- port. I am running Windows 3.1.
-
- Using this port and a USR Sportster 14.4 (external), I am able
- to connect to my university PPP setup without any problems. The
- modem on the other end is also a Sportster 14.4 unless it has
- been changed recently, but the French version, while mine is the
- North American version. This has never caused any detectable
- problems, however. I use Trumpet 2.1f as my Winsock. I am able
- to make the standard PPP work, or to dial into another modem
- which dumps me onto an annex server, from which I can connect to
- a machine running slirp.
-
- In short, with the external modem, PPP works both on the dedicated
- server and using slirp without (or with very few frame check errors).
-
- Now the problem. Today I installed the Texas Instrument internal
- 14.4 modem on Com 2. MSD shows this as a 16550AF UART. The
- modem works fine in DOS, and Trumpet works fine using Slirp.
- I should mention here that the modem on the ISP end of the
- Slirp connection is 9600 baud with no error correction or
- compression.
-
- When I try to connect to the dedicated PPP server, however,
- I get a frame check error for each character sent or received.
-
- I have tried:
- Installing the cybercom.drv driver
- Making all of Al's recommended changes to the system.ini file.
- Every possible setting of hardware flow control on the modem.
- Every value of the serial port rate I can think of, both in
- Trumpet and using the control panel setup.
-
- The modem is sold under the Texas Instr. brand name, but is
- actually a US Robotics Worldport 14,400 with a late 1993
- DSP date. I bought this off the net from someone who was getting
- rid of them, and a bios update seems like an unlikely possibility.
- I have found a couple of other bugs (ATZ doesn't load the
- NVRAM setting for example), so this could be the problem,
- but I'm hoping someone has a simple solution to the problem,
- short of always using slirp at 9600/None.
-
- Any help will be greatly appreciated, posted or by e-mail.
- I'll be glad to send the ATI output to anyone who thinks it
- could help them solve my problems.
-
- Thanks in advance,
- Mike
